Hart County One Room Schoolhouse Committee
|
The Hart County Historical Society’s One-Room Schoolhouse Committee was formed to research, document, and help preserve the history of the one-room schoolhouses that once served communities throughout Hart County.
Hundreds of these schools once existed across the county, yet most are no longer standing, and many of those that remain are in fragile condition. As time passes, both the physical structures and the personal memories connected to them are at risk of being lost. The committee’s goal is to record as much information as possible about all one-room schoolhouses, whether they are still standing or no longer exist. This includes identifying locations, gathering historical records, and preserving personal recollections from those who attended or taught in these schools. As the individuals with firsthand knowledge grow older, this work has become increasingly time-sensitive. |

What You Can Do
The history of Hart County’s one-room schoolhouses cannot be preserved through records alone. Much of what is known about these schools exists only in family collections and personal memory. Community members play a vital role in ensuring this history is documented before it is lost.
