America 250 celebration

Hart County Historical Society Celebrates America's 250th Anniversary

Picture

The Kentucky Arts Council and the Kentucky Historical Society have awarded $10,000 to the Hart County Historical Society to support the arts in celebration of our country’s 250 years since the signing of the Declaration of Independence. As the United States marks this milestone, the commonwealth is exploring the people, places, and events that have shaped our shared history. Through this semiquincentennial initiative, the Hart County Historical Society will use this funding to provide artists from a variety of fields the opportunity to honor this historic moment through events connected to Hart County history.
Accordingly, the Historical Society has assembled a series of activities and classes, all of which will be led by Hart County artists, open to the public, and, thanks to this generous funding, free to participants. The activities include three “gatherings” and two class series.

Gatherings:

Friday, June 12, 6:00 P.M. CDT, 2026
Diana Aubrey plays early hymns, and you are invited to sing along.  Beginning at the Hart County Historical Society Museum (the Chapline Building), at 109 Main Street, Munfordville, Ky. 42765.
Diana Aubrey majored in music history and theory at Campbellsville University. She is certified as a teacher of music by the Music Teachers Association and by UTC to teach piano. She has developed "Music Train" for teaching elementary children.
Diana has an interest in early hymns and has collected early hymnals.  She plans to play selections on HCHS's 1904 Windsor pump organ in the Society’s 1893 Chapline building for the first part of the evening, then move to the 1835 Munfordville Presbyterian church for additional hymns played on their small grand piano.  She will discuss the hymns and their history with audience members and at times, will invite the audience to sing as she plays. Hart County Historical Society Board member Patrick Goodman will provide transportation between venues in a vintage vehicle.

Saturday, June 27, 4:00 P.M. CDT, 2026
Join us for Haiku and old-fashioned Kentucky iced tea with Charles D. Williams at the Old Munford Inn, 108 North Washington St.
Charlie is a Duke graduate with his law degree from U of K, a tree farmer, and the winner of the distinguished Leopold Conservation Award.  He is also a writer and poet who has published books and poetry collections, most recently, a Haiku collection that has received a glowing review from the Haiku Society of America.  He will present an afternoon of readings from his own works and the Haiku master of Kobayashi Issa (1763 – 1828), generally known as Issa. “Issa's haiku are often tender, but stand out most for their irreverence and wry humor.” Robert Hass.

Friday, July 10, 6:30 P.M. CDT, 2026
Steve Kistler, Janet Kistler, and Joe Larson play authentic, early music, the music our ancestors enjoyed, from lyrical to lively.  Join us for a memorable, toe-tapping evening.  at Munfordville Presbyterian Church, 122 North Union Street, Munfordville, Ky. 42765.
Steve Kistler plays guitar. Janet plays piano, as well as hammered dulcimer. They were both active as singers, directors, and accompanists with the Hart County Community Chorus throughout its existence.
Joe has decades of experience playing bluegrass, gospel, and rock at various area venues. He taught banjo and guitar in Bowling Green and Hart County for many years. He will be playing the banjo for this performance.
Each musician will give a brief history of his/her instrument and perform traditional songs, commenting on their history and style.

Advanced basket classes
Scott Gilbert and Beth Hester are makers, collectors, and teachers of baskets. They learned white oak basket making in the early 1980s from Ollie and Lestel Childress, fourth and fifth generation Hart County
basket makers.  In 1993, Beth worked as an apprentice with master basket maker Lestel Childress through a grant from KAC.  Scott recently served as a KAC mentor artist, with apprentice Micah Wiles, through the KAC Folk and Traditional Arts Apprenticeship Program.  Now retired from The Basket Maker’s Catalog, they continue working to foster and encourage the Hart County tradition.  Beth and Scott have won numerous basket-making awards and have been included in many exhibits, most recently at WKU's Kentucky Museum.  Over four decades, they have also taught numerous basket-making classes, including several sponsored by KAC in Hart County. In this six-session workshop, students will learn Hart County white oak basket-making traditions.  The first class will begin with an optional trip to the woods to select a suitable white oak tree. Students will break the tree down into hoops, ribs, and splits using traditional tools and techniques, and will complete a Hart County Egg Basket.
All classes meet at the Hart County Public Library, 9:30 AM until 2:00 PM EDT, on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday, July 23, 24, and 25, and on 30, 31, and August 1, 2026.

Class size is limited to 7 people, and moderate hand strength is required.  These classes tend to fill quickly.  Do not delay in reserving your space.  For reservations, call the Hart County Historical Society, 270-524-0101.  A $20 check, mailed or dropped off to the Hart County Historical Society, will serve as a deposit.  Your check will be returned to you at the first meeting.
